Review the Record Before Acting

Compare the collector name, original creditor, account number, balance, dates, ownership, and status across your records and reports. A collection can be unfavorable without being inaccurate.

If You Find a Possible Error

  1. Save copies of the reports and supporting records.
  2. Describe the specific fact you believe is wrong and why.
  3. Prepare a focused dispute for the appropriate reporting company or furnisher.
  4. Keep delivery records, responses, and follow-up dates together.

Consumers control whether and how to submit a dispute. An investigation can result in verification, correction, deletion, or another response depending on the evidence. No removal, score change, or response date beyond applicable legal requirements is guaranteed.
